Australia is a magnificent and varied country, offering a wide range of environments, landmarks and cultures. There are so many extraordinary places to visit and explore! I am on constant lookout for new and intriguing locations and features to photograph.
For many years I have been examining old buildings and machinery, framing the scene in my camera and preserving it for the future. A personal project of mine, I am proud to chronicle the history and heritage of the pioneers of this great country, each image telling a rich and compelling story. It is imperative to document these places and artefacts before it is too late: whether through natural deterioration or intentional destruction, the beauty and history that surrounds us is beginning to disappear and will soon wink out of existence. In speaking to a farmer, I inquired if there were any old structures on his property whose story I could document photographically, and he regretfully informed me that they had all been demolished. He admitted that he wished they had left them standing so they could still be enjoyed today.
These alterations are near and dear to my heart: the inspiration and motivation behind my immense appreciation and love for landscape photography. For me, they are a constant reminder and recall memories of being born and raised in a country town in Western Australia: a more simplified lifestyle with opportunities to develop creativity, bond with family, and connect to the land. I can’t help but wonder how the land changed from the time my grandfather pioneered the farm in Yillimininning (20 kilometres west of Narrogin) in 1924, to the times I spent there as a young boy, and again after my parents sold the farm so we could move to the town of Narrogin.
Throughout the changing seasons and passage of time, the world and our lives continue to alter in both subtle and extreme ways. Landscape photography captures the transformations in the world around us, evoking new, profound, and emotional responses when viewed. For these reasons, landscape photography compliment’s any home or office, vignettes to the world and life beyond our front door. A multifunctional genre suitable to any setting, beautiful landscape images will bring a desired ambiance to your space and serve as a wonderful conversation starter.
